Proverbs 3:7 (NLV)—Do not be wise in your own eyes. Fear the Lord and turn away from what is sinful.
The seat belt clicked into place and my husband gave me a look like, What are you doing? Because in the four days since we’d boarded the tour bus in San Juan, Costa Rica, I had yet to put on my seat belt. Feeling stroppy because he noticed, I said, “At least if we roll, I’ll be held in place.”
My answer, though in jest, brings to mind an important truth. When we believe God has the utmost power in our lives, his seat belt of wisdom protects us from sin—something our own wisdom cannot do.
When God straps us in, he helps us to not sin. He provides access to his knowledge of what is right and good so that we can make decisions in line with his plan.
To fight the struggle with sin, we can develop healthy spiritual practices such as asking other Christians for advice, reading and thinking about the scriptures to discover the right thing to do, and talking with God as much as we desire. When we do, he imparts his wisdom and teaches us to obey.
